How it works

Running the terrain,
the obstacles,
and yourself

Island Gladiator is an obstacle race in the outdoors. No track, no asphalt — fields, forest, hills, and obstacles in between that you clear on your own.

It's not a race just for racers. It's a race for anyone who wants to find out where their limit actually sits.

What is OCR

OCR stands for obstacle course racing. You run a course through open terrain, and along the way you hit obstacles — walls, ropes, carries, crawls.

It differs from ordinary running in one way. Fitness alone won't carry you. You need strength, technique, and a head that doesn't quit at the ninth obstacle.

You don't have to be an athlete

Many of our participants aren't athletes at all. They're people who decided to try something that felt out of reach — and found out it wasn't.

The course can be walked. The time limit is set so that anyone who refuses to quit will make it.

Format

How a race runs

Exact numbers vary between events. This is the framework that holds everywhere.

5+ kilometres Off-road course — dirt tracks, trails, hills or sand.
10+ obstacles Spread across the whole course, not stacked in one place.
3+ h time limit Enough for anyone who walks it rather than runs it.
18+ age You can start from eighteen years old.

Starts run in waves a few minutes apart, so obstacles don't turn into queues.
Dates, locations and prices are always listed with each individual race under Events.

Obstacles

What's waiting

The mix changes with the terrain and the edition, but these types show up every time.

🧱
Walls
From low ones to two metres, some with an overhang. Technique matters more than raw strength.
🏋️
Carries
Sandbags, buckets, jerry cans. Simple to understand, hard to finish.
🪢
Hanging & climbing
Monkey bars, ropes, traverses. This is where grip training shows.
⚖️
Balance
Beams and unstable surfaces. Speed won't help you here, focus will.
🐍
Crawling
Under nets and low to the ground. Expect to get dirty.
🎯
Precision & mind
Target throws, memory tasks. Fatigue hits these harder than you'd expect.
Rules

Fair play is
the code

We don't only measure time. We measure how you handle it when nobody's watching.

Miss it, pay for it

Every obstacle has to be attempted. If it doesn't go your way, a penalty follows — 20 burpees or a penalty loop, sometimes carrying weight. No exceptions and no shame in it. A penalty isn't a failure, it's part of the race.

🚫
No outside help Help from spectators or others isn't allowed unless an organiser approves it.

FAQ

Got questions?

Yes. Many of our participants aren't athletes, and for plenty of them it's the first race of their life. The time limit allows the course to be walked, and a failed obstacle costs you burpees, not a disqualification. The only thing you really need is the will to reach the finish.
Clothes and shoes you don't mind ruining, a change of clothes, a towel and photo ID. Some people like gloves. Everything else comes from us. Detailed instructions go out by email a few days before the race.
A penalty follows — 20 burpees or a penalty loop. The race doesn't end there, you carry on. A failed obstacle isn't a defeat; turning around and going home is.
No. Trail shoes with decent grip and comfortable clothing will do. Dedicated OCR shoes or gloves help, but they're not required — your first race is perfectly doable in what you already own.
Of course, and we're glad when people do. Spectator entry is free and the festival zone is open to everyone. Most spectators end up signing up for the next edition.
Yes. You can enter a team name during registration and start in the same wave.
18 years. We verify age at check-in, which is why photo ID is mandatory.
We race in any weather — rain rather belongs to obstacle racing. We'd only cancel in a situation that puts safety at risk, such as a thunderstorm. Any change is announced by email and on social media.

All that's left is picking a race. Or waiting for the one that fits.
